WiFi management for hotels

Hotels and hospitals share a common challenge: providing reliable WiFi to hundreds of guests while protecting internal networks. The solution is a properly configured WiFi management system with authentication gateway.

The WiFi Challenge in Hospitality and Healthcare

A 100-room hotel might have 200+ guest devices at peak occupancy. A 300-bed hospital has thousands - patients, visitors, doctors, nurses, medical equipment, IoT sensors, and admin staff all needing connectivity. Without proper management, WiFi becomes a nightmare: slow speeds, dropped connections, security risks, and constant complaints.

Two Networks, One Infrastructure

The fundamental principle is separation. You need at least two distinct logical networks running on the same physical infrastructure:

Guest Network

What visitors connect to. Easy to access, reasonable speed, prevents abuse, and keeps guest devices isolated from each other and internal systems. Should be metered and rate-limited.

Corporate / Clinical Network

For staff, equipment, and internal systems. Invisible to guests, requires strong authentication, allows access to internal resources. Medical devices, POS systems, security cameras, and admin computers all live here.

VLAN segmentation enforces this separation at the network level - even if a guest device is compromised, it cannot reach corporate systems.

Authentication Methods for Guest WiFi

Open WiFi (NOT Recommended)

No password, no login. Creates legal liability if guests use your network for illegal activity. You cannot identify users or comply with Indian IT Act logging requirements.

Pre-Shared Key (PSK)

Same password for everyone. Better than open but you cannot identify individual users, the password leaks easily, no accountability.

OTP via SMS (Recommended)

Guest enters mobile number, receives an OTP, enters OTP to connect. This identifies each user, complies with Indian IT Act logging requirements, and creates a marketing database.

Voucher-Based Access

Receptionist generates a voucher code at check-in. Guest enters code to access WiFi for the duration of their stay. Built-in time limits.

Social Login

Guest signs in with Google, Facebook, or other social accounts. Easy for users, marketing data for the venue.

Bandwidth Control Per User

Without bandwidth control, one heavy user can ruin WiFi for everyone. A single guest streaming 4K video can consume your entire internet pipe.

Per-user bandwidth control fixes this:

  • Standard guests: 5 Mbps download, 2GB daily limit
  • Premium guests: 25 Mbps download, unlimited
  • Conference attendees: 10 Mbps each during event
  • Long-stay guests: 15 Mbps download, 10GB daily
  • Block bandwidth-heavy services like BitTorrent

Branded Authentication Gateway

When guests connect to your WiFi and open a browser, they should see your hotel or hospital branding - your logo, colors, and welcome message. This is the authentication gateway.

  • Professional first impression - polished branding, not generic forms
  • Marketing opportunities - promote restaurant, spa, room service
  • Information delivery - house rules, emergency contacts
  • Multilingual support - serve international guests
  • Consent collection - terms of service, marketing opt-in
  • Brand consistency

Centralized Multi-AP Management

Most venues do not have one access point - they have dozens or hundreds. A WiFi controller lets you manage all APs from one dashboard:

  • Push configuration changes to all APs simultaneously
  • Monitor real-time status of every AP
  • See which AP each guest is connected to
  • Schedule maintenance windows
  • Generate usage reports
  • Identify dead zones

Real Use Cases

Boutique Hotel - Coimbatore

A 60-room hotel deployed Linsys WiFi AP Controller across all floors plus restaurant and conference area. They use OTP authentication for guests, room number authentication for premium suites. Guest complaints dropped from 15 per week to under 1 per month.

Multi-Specialty Hospital

A 200-bed hospital uses Linsys to manage WiFi across all wards, clinics, ICU, and pharmacy. Patients connect via OTP, doctors use 802.1X enterprise authentication, medical devices have static IPs on a quarantined VLAN.

Banquet Hall and Convention Center

A wedding venue handles 500+ guest devices at peak events. Bandwidth control prevents any single user from hogging. Branded portal promotes the venue and captures lead emails.

Linsys WiFi AP Controller is built for Indian conditions - reliable on patchy fiber connections, easy to deploy, supports SMS OTP via local providers, managed through a single cloud dashboard.
